Streets

Services

The Street department's mission is to maintain and provide a safe transportation infrastructure.

The Streets Division maintains town-owned paved streets and dirt roads in the town.

State system roads and private streets, such as those in gated communities, are not maintained by the town.

Other services conducted by the Streets Department include:

  • Installing and maintaining storm drainage systems serving town streets, repair potholes and utility cuts.
  • Installing and maintaining sidewalks along town and state system streets.
  • Street sweeping on town and state system streets according to a schedule that varies with need and location; typically, only streets with curb and gutters are swept.
  • Maintaining street name signs on all public streets within town limits, traffic signs and markings along town maintained streets.
  • Overseeing the provision of streetlights along town streets which are installed and maintained by Duke Energy Progress.

The Right of Way Division: Tree Maintenance: This department handles all questions, requests, and maintenance for trees on town properties and rights-of-way. They assess whether a tree is within the right-of-way and address any hazards to public safety, such as sight hindrances at intersections.

Dead Animal Removal: If a dead animal is found on the road or in the right-of-way, The Right of Way Division arranges for its removal. Please call (910) 692-1983.

Stormwater Easements Mowing: Property owners are generally responsible for maintaining stormwater easements on their land, including regular mowing and ensuring that the area remains free of obstructions to facilitate proper drainage.

Vacant Wooded Lots Mowing: The maintenance of vacant wooded lots, including mowing, typically falls to the property owners. The town may intervene if overgrown vegetation poses a public nuisance or violates local ordinances.

Litter pickup:  The responsibility for litter pickup along rights-of-way is shared between the Town's Public Works Department and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), depending on the specific location.

The Town's Right of Way Division manages litter removal on town-maintained streets and public rights-of-way. If you observe litter accumulation in these areas, you can report it by calling the department at 910-692-1983. They will arrange for cleanup if the litter is within the town's jurisdiction.
