About the Board

The Southern Pines Planning Board is an advisory authority to the Southern Pines Town Council.

The Planning Board has many duties relating to the growth, development, and redevelopment of the town and its surrounding extraterritorial planning area. Therefore, it may be asked to make studies and recommend to the council the plans, goals, and objectives relating to this. Once this is done these plans must be carried out in a coordinated and efficient manner and recommended to the Town Council in the form of policies, ordinances, and administrative procedures.

Other ways that Planning Board members use their talents, energies, and expertise is when the council asks that they support advisory committee members who have been appointed to assist the board with its responsibilities with respect to a particular subject area. Some of these areas of consideration might be a thoroughfare plan, a bikeway path, housing plans, or an economic development plan.
