1. Before I dig on my property how do I get my utilities located or marked?

To locate all utilities on your property, including water, sewer, electric, cable, internet, and phone, please call 811. They will come out and mark the entry points into your property and the underground lines to your home.

2. How do I get a driveway/erosion and sediment control/water and sewer service form?

3. How do I find out if water and sewer is available at or near my property; and if it's not, how do I get the line extended?

Please come and visit engineering services at the Public Works office. You may call ahead for an appointment at 910-692-1983, ext. 6223.

4. What streets does the town maintain?

The town maintains town-owned paved streets and dirt roads in the town. State system roads are maintained by North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) at 910-947-2233. For State roads, you can find out more information or make a complaint at the state DOT website.

There are also private streets in town. If you live in a gated community, your street is probably maintained by your homeowners association or developer.

5. Which streets does the town sweep?

The town typically sweeps every street within town limits that has curb and gutters.

6. Who do I call for questions or problems regarding my garbage or recycling services?

The town contracts with Waste Industries to provide garbage and recycling services. For any questions or problems, please call Waste Industries at 866-423-4122.

7. How can I apply for my recycling to be picked up on the front porch?

Residents with handicaps and disabilities may request to have their recycling containers picked up on their front porch by submitting a Disabled Consideration Request. The request forms can be obtained by calling the town at 910-692-1983, ext. 6225.

8. How do I dispose of electronics such as televisions or computers?

Moore County operates a number of convenient drop off locations where you can recycle electronics. The nearest locations to Southern Pines are on Highway 5 between Aberdeen and Pinehurst and on Highway 15/501 at Hillcrest, near Carthage.

9. What are my scheduled pick-up days for garbage and recycling?

You can find your scheduled pick up day by referring to the Garbage Schedule Map or by using the interactive map on the town’s Geographic Information System (GIS) site.

10. How often does yard waste get picked up?

Approximately once every two weeks on the same day as garbage and recycling collection.

11. What size must tree limbs be in order to be picked up?

Tree limbs must not be more than 4 feet in length or 4 inches in diameter, and they must be separated from yard rakings.

12. How do I report a pothole?

When you see a pothole, please report it to the Town of Southern Pines Public Works Department at 910-692-1983, ext. 6225.

13. How do I get the ditches in my neighborhood cleaned out so it doesn't flood when it rains?

14. What do I do if I see a dead animal on the road?

Call the Public Works Department at 910-692-1983 with the location, and, if the animal is determined to be on a town right-of-way, they will arrange for removal. A dead animal on private property is the responsibility of the property owner.

15. Who should I call if I have a sewer backup?

If there is a possibility that your sewer problem is in the town’s portion of the lines, you should call the town first, not a plumber; call 910-692-1983. We will gladly come and correct the problem if it is in the town’s system, or let you know if you need to call a plumber.

16. What if I have a water main break or sewer backup after hours?

If you have a sewer backup or water main break after hours on weekdays, weekends, or holidays please contact the town at 910-692-1627.

17. What's a sewer backup?

Sewer backups are not just a 'bad smell' in your house. Sewer backups are usually first indicated by a combination of your toilet not flushing properly and none of your drains working properly. You may also see sewage coming into your house from your toilets or drains.

18. What is a water main break?

A water main break is where the line in the street or leading up to your house before the water meter has broken and is releasing water. If the water is leaking after the meter, shut off the water at the meter and call a plumber. If the water is leaking before it arrives at the meter (usually seen by large amounts of water in the yard or street), please call public works at 910-692-1983.

19. What if it's after hours and I find out my water has been cut off?

Water services may be restored on the following business day once any billing discrepancies have been resolved. There are no after-hours services available to turn your service back on. Please contact the Utility Billing Office at 910-692-2206, or visit:

21. How do I apply for a new water and/or sewer taps?

If you are applying for a new water or sewer tap, contact the Town of Southern Pines Public Works Department at 910-692-1983, ext. 6228.

Pay by Bank Draft:
The bank draft application can be downloaded or is available at the Utility Billing Office. Once the form has been completed and a voided check attached, please return the documents to the Utility Billing and Collections Office.

23. How do I report concerns about sight hindrances, mowing on Town property, or tree issues?
