MEMORANDUM FOR MEDIA AND RESIDENTS OF
THE TOWN OF SOUTHERN PINES (TOSP)
SUBJECT: Untreated Wastewater Release
PURPOSE: Public Notification
1. General Statute Article 21, Chapter 143-215C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 15,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.
2. In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in the affected county:
“The Town of Southern Pines (Moore County) had a discharge of untreated wastewater on October 25, 2014 of an estimated 70,000 gallons along North Carolina Highway 22, approximately 100 yards south of Mill Creek. The untreated wastewater was discharged into a ditch along NC22, which ran into Mill Creek.
The Town Utilities Division was notified of the event at approximately 1:00 p.m., October 25, 2014. All efforts to mitigate wastewater release were taken. Repairs were completed and system returned to service at approximately 12:30 a.m., October 26, 2014, and cleanup/sanitizing efforts were conducted.”
