TREES OF SOUTHERN PINES
TREEmendous
Trees of Southern PinesCover of brochure for Awards Program
The TREEmendous Trees of Southern Pines grew out of the interest of the citizens of Raleigh in 1992 requestion that Raleigh establish a "Champion Tree Program" to recognize the largest, rarest, oldest and prettiest trees of a various species. The Appearance Commission of Southern Pines chose the name TREEmendous Trees of Southern Pines to reflect the commitment to recognize and appreciate all the trees of the Town of Southern Pines, North Carolina.

The Awards
Program
The Awards Program seeks to identify, document and recognize special trees or stands of trees and add them to the TREEmendous Trees of Southern Pines Program Honor Roll. The goal is to stimiulate awareness of urban forest diversity and commitment to the tree canopy and roots. The awards program may also recognize efforts by individuals or organizations to plant and nurture new trees. For more information read our brochure (see link below). If you wish to make a nomination that link is listed below as well.

Significant Trees in Southern PinesLive Oak in front of Campbell House
The idea for a publication originated out of the desire of the Southern Pines Appearance Commission and the Southern Pines Buildings and Grounds Department to raise public awareness of the importance of trees in the Southern Pines urban forest, many having reached the "Significant" classification by virtue of their age and/or size.
Southern Pines has evolved from a natural state with trees being a calling card to the many guests and residents alike who understand the beauty and economic importance of the town which is a resort area attracting many visitors.
Included in our publication (download below or pick up a copy at the Southern Pines Recreation Department - 482 E Connecticut Avenue - Southern Pines) are two most interesting trees, one being the Second Largest Long Leaf Pine in North Carolina (#12)  and the other is the Oldest Known Living Long Leaf Pine in America whose age is 460 years (#13) both of which are located on the Weymouth Center grounds, East Connecticut Avenue.
Individual trees are identified by metal tags attached to each which number corresponds to those trees described and photographed in this publication. The inventory of significant trees was financed by a $4,300 grant awarded by the North Carolina Department of Forest Resources with funds for the publication provided by the Town of Southern Pines. Bartlett Tree Company of Charlotte, NC, conducted the physical inventory.
