Community Oriented Policing

The Southern Pines Police Department utilizes the philosophy, tools and strategies of Community Oriented Policing.  In a democratic society, law enforcement is a vital and integral element of the public and community.  By following the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing, we strive to create an atmosphere of positive interaction between the public and the police and a mutual understanding of the role of both in matters of public safety.   We focus the resources of law enforcement to achieve a positive impact by attempting to solve community problems.  We create partnerships with community groups, neighborhoods and other facets of government as we strive to establish a climate in which officers can perform their duties with the acceptance, understanding and approval of the public.  The aim of Community Oriented Policing is to create police/public partnerships which will empower the community to work directly with the police department to:

1.

Prevent or deter crime.

2.

Promote a public awareness that is based upon the factual incidents of crime.

3.

Address “quality of life” issues in the community.

4.

Improve community satisfaction with the Southern Pines Police Department.

5.

Generate police/community relationships to aid in solving crime.
