Personnel

The department is composed of two groups of personnel, career and volunteer. Presently there are forty members in the department: twenty-two career members and eighteen volunteer members. Volunteer personnel are the primary source of manpower for fire suppression activities during the evening and overnight hours.

Volunteer personnel comprise half the departmental personnel. Volunteer personnel receive notification of emergency calls via pagers. Typically, there are around twenty active volunteer members. The department has maintained a steady trickle of applicants for volunteer membership. Some of the volunteer personnel have completed courses of the N.C. Certification Programs. Volunteer members serve throughout all ranks in the department as officers, driver/operators, and firefighters.

Presently there are twenty-two full time fire department personnel. The Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, two Fire Marshals, and one Administrative Assistant work daytime hours during the weekdays. The remaining full time staff works a 24.10 hour rotational shift schedule. You will find a link at the bottom of the page which illustrates the shift schedules. Career personnel provide the technical and support services to maintain departmental facilities and equipment that volunteer members are unable to provide due to time limitations and the increasing demands placed on our staff by other agencies. Presently, all members of the career staff hold NC Level II firefighter certification and EMT Level certification. Both the paid and volunteer members of the department provide fire and safety educational programs. Code enforcement and Inspections are conducted by the Fire Marshals. Administrative duties are divided among the Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Fire Marshals, and Fire Captains. Over the past couple of years the department has computerized some areas of administration and operations to increase efficiency and improve performance. We continue to look for ways to streamline all operations and administration functions.
