Walking School Bus

Walking School Bus (children attending Southern Pines Elementary School) beginning March 13, 2013. FREE!
Children will meet at SPES Gym on designated Wednesdays at 2:30pm and walk to the Campbell House Parking Lot (482 E. Connecticut Avenue near the T-Ball fields) with an expected arrival time of 2:50pm (or so).
Adult volunteers are needed to help supervise and walk with the children. See the Recreation Programs page for more information and registration.

Adopt-A-Street

The Southern Pines Appearance Commission is working to Keep Southern Pines Beautiful. The Appearance Commission is offering an Adopt-A-Street program as a way for groups to help in the beautification effort in Southern Pines. For more information on how you can participate go to Government, left side of this page, Volunteer Boards, Appearance Commission and scroll down to the flyer for Adopt-A-Street.
What we need from you is 1. A signed agreement to adopt the street of your choice after approval by the Southern Pines Appearance Commission. 2. Adopt at least a six block stretch and maintain both sides of the street every three (3) months (4 times a year).
Each participating group will be recognizsed with a personalized sign to acknowledge their participation in our Adopt-A-Street Program.

Visitors entering Southern Pines from the north will now be greeted by a brand new "Welcome to Southern Pines" sign, on the right side of the highway, that compliments the natural beauty of the Southern Pines area.
The Southern Pines Appearance Commission designed and updated this sign shortly before Christmas.
The Town of Southern Pines Appearance Commission plans and carries out programs to enhance and improve the visual quality and aesthetic characteristics of the Town.

Downtown Park Master Plan Request for Public Input

The Southern Pines Recreation & Parks Department is seeking public input on a new conceptual master plan for the Downtown Park located at 145 SE Broad Street in Southern Pines. Local consultants Bob Koontz, Lynn Anderson and Vince Zucchino have been meeting various stakeholders and with Town staff over the last several months to develop a conceptual master plan. The Town is seeking feedback by sending an email, mailing comments to the Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Department, 482 E. Connecticut Avenue, faxing comments to 910-692-1835, or by attending the Town Council meeting when this item is on the agenda for discussion. Once all comments have been received, a final master plan will be presented to Town Council for its consideration of approval at a future Town Council meeting.

Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee Meeting

Disc Golf Course

Southern Pines Recreation has opened a Disc Golf Course at the Reservoir Park at 300 Reservoir Park Road in Southern Pines. It is an 18 hold course and recommended you should wear long pants and sunscreen. Bring your own frisbee and be ready for some fun. For rules and regulations go to our webpage under Town Services on the left and select Recreation & Parks then section Parks. Located under the Reservoir Park information you will find Disc Golf Course Rules.

Join the community for a 'Concert in the Pines' at Downtown Park on Sunday, May 15. The Pinecrest High School Band will be performing, free of charge, to the public. The event begins at 6:00 pm and ends at 8:00 pm. The Pinecrest High School Band Boosters will be selling concessions on site. Come and enjoy a wonderful evening of music from the Pinecrest High School Band.

Recycle your Mixed Paper Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Southern Pines Recreation Center at 160 Memorial Park Court. You can recycle between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.
Any type of paper, flattened boxes, paper grocery bags, telephone books, paperback books, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, shredded paper, office paper, and newspapers. Also accepting: Any type of Household and rechargeable batteries, inkjet cartridges, cameras, cell phones, diskettes, CD's, DVD's, and laptops.

Adult Co-ed Kickball Tournament Managers Meeting. Kickball, the granddaddy of them all - the game created in the backyards of our youth finally comes to Southern Pines. An organizational meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 15th at 6:00 pm at the Train House, located next to the Campbell House at 482 E. Connecticut Avenue. Team coaches and representatives interested in playing must attend this meeting to discuss tournament dates, locations, rules and fees. Games will be played at the Memorial B Field or Optimist softball field beginning in July. This will definitely be a fun tournament that you won't want to miss!

In early 2010, Southern Pines' Bicycle Plan Steering Committee met for the first of four meetings to confirm project visions and goals, identify desired outcomes of the plan, and determine public involvement strategies. The key statement is as follows:

"The Town of Southern Pines will become a bicycle-friendly community by developing a combination of infrastructure, education programs, and policies that support and encourage bicycling."

Old is New! The History of Bicycles

In 1839, the bicycle was introduced. Handlebars and pedals had been added to an earlier version, thus allowing the rider to propel the bicycle with his/her feet off the ground. Learn about the history behind bicycles while enjoying a ‘Biker’s salad.’ We will make kabobs using unsliced bologna and alternate with olives, pickles and pineapple chunks. Fun begins promptly at 11:30 am. on July 13 at the Douglass Community Center Lounge. Please register by July 6. The cost is $2residents/$4non-residents.

The Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Department is offering a variety of programs to encourage people of all ages to stay active and fit this summer.

Two gyms are available at the Southern Pines Recreation Center on Saturdays 11:00 – 1:00 pm June 5 – Aug. 21 for Saturday Open Gym for 50+. Anyone, ages 50+, may play basketball, walk, exercise and more. $10 for residents and $20 for non – residents of Southern Pines.

Join us for Tuesday Fun at the Southern Pines Pool!! at 2:00 pm. from June 15 to Aug. 24, Splish, Splash your way as children enjoy innovative pool games and tried and true favorites! Free with pool admission.
