Chlorine to Temorarily Disenfect Southern Pines Water Supply Beginning October 15th, 2012

The Town of Southern Pines Water Department will temporarily change the method of disinfection used in its public water supply, beginning October 15, 2012.

The Water Department normally uses chloramine, a mixture of ammonia and chlorine, to disinfect water. Beginning Monday, Ocober 15, and until Thursday, November 15, the Water Department will be using chlorine only, also known as "free chlorine." The periodic and temporary conversion from chloramines to free chlorine, which is a normal procedure for water systems, ensures water safety in distribution lines and the highest quality of drinking water.

Free chlorine is a stronger disinfectant than chloramine. As a result, water users may experience a slight change in the aesthetics of their water during the conversion, including a noticeable "chlorine odor" and slight discoloration. Most symptoms should lessen after the first few weeks and do not affect the safety of the water supply.

The Water Department will monitor chlorine levels and water quality standards in the distribution system on a daily basis to ensure the safety of the water and that all state and regulatory standards are met.

For more information, please call, David McKew, Water Treatment Plant Superintendent at 910-281-4719 or review the FAQ document

Water Shortage Response Plan and Policy Public Comments Welcomed

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WATER SHORTAGE RESPONSE PLAN AND POLICY PUBLIC COMMENTS WELCOMED

The Town of Southern Pines is updating its Water Shortage Response Plan and Policy. This policy is used to initiate or rescind various stages of water use restrictions depending upon the availability of water for customers. The existing plan utilizes the flow of water (cubic feet per second) in Drowning Creek to determine the stage of restriction. The proposed new policy will utilize the combined volume of the two raw water reservoirs as the method for determining the level of conservation measures requested or required.

The updating of the policy is due to the fact that the Town has recently completed, and nearly filled, its new 140 million gallon raw water reservoir storage facility. In the past, the Town only had the capacity of a 20 million gallon raw water reservoir for storage and therefore was very dependent on the daily flow of Drowning Creek to provide the raw water required to meet the demands of the water customers. The new raw water reservoir, combined with the old raw water reservoir provides much more storage capacity and hence the move to the new policy.

Please visit the Town’s web page at www.southernpines.net to view the proposed policy, or call David White, Assistant Town Manager, at 692.2463 to receive a copy of the policy. Public comments are welcome. Please provide your feedback by September 4, 2012.

Town Manager Reagan Parsons has lifted the mandatory water conservation measures. The recent rain fall has caused the Town's raw water source, Drowning Creek, to exceed the flow that required previous conservation orders. However, the Town is still requesting voluntary compliance with the following water conservation measures.

That the irrigation of established lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers or plants be limited to three (3) days per week. Even numbered addresses irrigate on even number days and odd numbered addresses irrigate on odd numbered days.

Do not establish new plantings

Do not wash motor vehicles except at commercial car washes

Do no wash down exterior paved surfaces such as driveways, sidewalks, etc.

Only refill swimming pools or ornamental fountains

With the extreme heat and the forecast for limited rainfall, all need to be reminded that the conservation status could revert back to a mandatory Stage 2 Warning in the near future.

Proper Placement of Yard Trash

The Town of Southern Pines provides for the collection of leaves, limbs, and yard clippings approximately once every two weeks. It is the property owner's responsibility to see that this trash is properly placed at the curb for collection.

Problems are sometimes created when trash is placed on the roadway or in gutters and roadside ditches. Piles of trash on the roadway or too near the travel lane of more heavily traveled roads often create traffic hazards. Trash in gutters and ditches causes catch basins and culverts to stop up which also can create hazards and maintenance problems.

The Town of Southern Pines and the State of North Carolina (for state system roads) both have ordinances regulating the placement of trash along roadways.

Please help keep your street clean and safe by not putting trash in or too near the street or in gutters and roadside ditches.

Storm Water Information

Stormwater is the No. 1 cause of water pollution in NC. When it rains, the rain that runs across our yards and roads into storm drains is called stormwater.

Storm drains carry untreated storm water and whatever the water picks up directly to creeks, lakes, and rivers. If we want to keep our rivers and creeks clean, we need to keep chemicals, oils and other pollutants out of our storm drains.

Ways You Can Help

Never place anything down a storm drain, Reduce impervious areas so that rain can soak into the ground naturally, Conserve water, use native plants, limit use of fertilizer and never fertilize before a rainstorm, clean up after your pets, wash your car at a commercial car wash or where the water can soak into the ground, reduce, recycle and reuse.
