SOUTHERN PINES ASKS FOR VOLUNTARY CONSERVATION MEASURES
The Town of Southern Pines has joined with its surrounding communities and declared a Stage 1 Alert for all water customers of the Town. A stage 1 Alert is a Voluntary Conservation request with the goal being a reduction in average consumption of at least Twenty Percent (20%) for all customers. The following voluntary measures are requested:
The irrigation and sprinkling of established lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers or plants be limited to three (3) days per week. Even numbered addresses may irrigate on even number days and odd number addresses may irrigate on odd numbered days but no more than three (3) days per week.
New plantings should not be established at this time.
Motor vehicles should not be washed, except at commercial car washes.
Do not wash down exterior paved surface such as streets, driveways, service station aprons, parking lots, sidewalks, patios, etc.
Do not fill swimming pools. Only refill pools or water features due to evaporation.
Use disposable and biodegradable dishes as much as possible.
All phases of construction related activities should conserve water and locate additional sources of water.
In addition to these Stage 1 voluntary measures, the Town of Southern Pines offers the following suggestions to help protect this valuable resource (and your pocketbook!) year-round:
- Limit the use of your garbage disposal.
- Operate clothes washers and dishwashers only when fully loaded.
- Take showers instead of using the bathtub, and limit shower to no more than five (5) minutes.
- Do not leave faucets running while shaving, rinsing dishes, brushing teeth, etc.
- Limit operating hours of water-cooled air conditioning units that do not recycle cooling water.
- Where feasible, reduce pressure on water supply line, if it will not affect operations of equipment, public safety, or health devices.
- Reduce pressure at plumbing fixtures and install flow restricting devices within public buildings, institutions, dormitories and similar facilities.
- Check for and repair leaks within homes and businesses.
- Install a water flow restriction device in showerheads and other water saving devices such as early closing flapper valves in toilets, etc.
