You have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of recreation activities. Take some time out for fun, fitness, and fellowship, developing new skills, renewing an old hobby, making new friends, and more. No invitation is needed and THE BENEFITS ARE ENDLESS!!! Put your name on the mailing list to receive up-to-date information on programs for adults age 55 and better. Details on programs listed, as well as new programs and trips, are described in the SENIOR CHALLENGE which is distributed monthly. Volunteering is a great way to learn about the Town and Programs offered through the senior division and the Recreation Department. Make new friends and have fun with us at the Douglass Community Center. Please call 692-7376 to register as a volunteer or just come by and pick up a calendar of events.

Gourmet Adventure Day
Are you tired of eating meat loaf? Do you want to put some excitement into your meals? Join the Douglass Communtiy Center division as we'll visit a local gourmet restaurant. We will depart from the Douglass Communtiy Center at 11:45 am. We will return at 1:00 pm.

Temple Theatre
Flaming Idiots by Tom Rooney
Carl and Phil decide that the ladder to success at the post office is missing a few rungs. They know that big money is waiting for people with entrepreneurial spirit and sound business judgement. They have lots of the
spirit but little of the judgement and their new gourmet health food restaurant flounders. Zippy's, a popular cross town spot, has been crowded ever since Cy Manamalancia, a notorious mobster, was shot there and that was over twenty years ago. What if someone could get murdered in their restaurant? Flaming Idiots is a contemporay farce which takes place entirely in the restaurant kitchen and requires five doors for slamming.

Senior Special Events

Groovin' With The Seventies
What's happening! Plenty in the 1970s. Travel back in time to the 1970s with our special event. We will listen to Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and more!  For refeshments, we will serve refreshments, Tie-Dye cookies and soft drinks. We will also pay trivia related to Grammy Award winners from that decade.

Cholesterol Educatin Month
September is National Cholesterol Education Month, a good time toget your blood cholesterol checked and take steps to lower it if it is high. National Cholesterol Education Month is a good time to learn about lipid profiles and about food and lifestyle choices that help you reach personal cholesterol goals. We will have a guest speaker to discuss the importance of keeping your cholesterol healthy and checked.

Agatha Christie's Birthday

Dame Agatha Christie DBE (15 September 1890 - 12 January 1976), was an English crime writer of novels, short stories and plays. She also wrote romances under the name Mary Westmacott, but is remembered for her 80 detective novels and her succesful West End theatre plays. Her works, particularily those featuring detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple, have given her the title the 'Queen of Crime' and made her a important writer in the development of the genre. We will honor Dame Agatha Christie by becoming detectives and taking fingerprints. We will discuss Agatha Christie and enjoy dessert and drinks.

North Carolina Senior Games
Senior Games in the Pines medalists will represent our area at the 26th annual event in Raleigh. Winners in 3 on 3 basketball will compete October 29, 30 in Greenville, NC and golfers will compete in Winston-Salem October 12-13.

Book Month
"Embark on the journey of a lifetime, travel to exotic places, mythical lands and experience adventure beyond imagination. Or escape to another era altogether. All without luggage, tickets, a passport or leaving home. All you need is an open mind. And an open book." Bring in your favorite book and have a discussion with the group or just enjoy listening. We will have light refreshments and drinks available.

Eleanor Roosevelt's Birthday
Eleanor Roosevelt was born in 1884.She inspired many Americans during the hard times of the Depression in World War II. One of the great things Eleanor Roosevelt said was, "No one can make you feel inferior unless you give your consent." She meant that even if you make a mistake and are critized, you are a special person and must always think of yourself that way. We will learn about this amazing woman's journey and enjoy light refreshments.

Jesse Owen's Day
In 1936, Jesse Owens, a young black athlete, won four gold medals at the Olympic Games held in Germany. He amazed the world by breaking nine Olympic records and equaling them twice. He sprinted, hurdled and jumped better than anyone in the world! We will play Wii and compete against other participants. The winner receives a prize. You will have a choice to compete in baseball, tennis, bowling, golf, and boxing.

Virginia Dare's Birthday
Virginia Dare was the first child born of English parents in the New World in 1587. Her parents were Elinor and Ananias Dare of Roanoke Island. We will go back in tme to discuss the first colonies established in the New World. We will serve light snacks and beverages. Bring in old photos and memorabilia to show.

Cape Fear Riverboats, Inc.
Come aboard and enjoy an hour and a half cruise aboard the Henrietta III on the scenic Cape Fear River, narrated by the Captain, followed by lunch-our Riverboat Deli Buffet. Menu includes: Crisp Tossed Salad with House Dressing/Baked French Rolls with Butter/Variety of Deli Meats (Ham, Roast Beef, Turkey) /Selection of Cheese/Variety of Breads and Assorted Condiments/Southern-style Potato Salad/Variety of Butter Cookies/Coffee and Tea.

CLUBS
Learn new skills, meet new people and have fun!

Bridge
Any of several card games derived from whist, usually played by four people in two partnerships, in which trump is determined by bidding and the hand opposite th declarer is played as a dummy.

Canasta
Canasta is a matching card game in which the object is to create melds of cards of the same rank and then go out by playing or discarding all cards in your hand.

Bingo
The Douglass Community Center will host bingo every other Monday. The game will begin at 2:30 pm and end when everyone gets tired. The cot is free if you bring a small prize.

ChessAre you sure you want to make that move?
Chess is a recreational and competitive  game for two players. Don Hammerman instructs all levels of participants. Bring a board and enjoy the challenge!

Mahjong Club
Mahjong is a game that originated in China and requires four players. Mahjong involves skill, strategy, an calculation, as well as a certain degree of luck. We have several sets so more individuals can play. The group at Douglass Community Center plays the Chinese version. Come join and learn to play if you have never tried. It is great fun! The group meets at 12:30 pm on the last Thursday of the month.

Darts
Do you enjoy throwing darts. Come and visit the Douglass Community Center on Friday afternoons for a game or two of electronic darts. It is a great way to have fun and interact with your peers.

Are you crafty? Artistic? Then join the Douglass Community Center's Craft Club. The club makes jewelry, decorations, and more. You will have the opportunitiy to meet new people while having fun. All crafts are free!

Trivia Day
Regardless of one's age and physical ability, games such as golf, billiards, board games, etc. are considered to be those types of recreational activities that people select to try in order to increase their mental and/or physical skills while enjoying the excitement. Games increase a person's capabilities and assist in developing a better understanding of ourselves.

Fitness & Classes for Seniors
Our fitness and wellness programs provide individuals with the opportunity to engage in fun and healthy activities. These programs provide low-impact exercise to help maintain a positive, life long regime.
 

Senior Gym Time
Walking is one of the best methods of exercising. It helps burn calories, reduces the risk of developing or dying of heart disease, helps maintain healthy bones, controls blood pressure, etc. Come out and join the senior gym time and enjoy walking while meeting new people.

Open Gym Saturday
Do you get bored on the weekends? Do you wish you had somewhere to go? Drive over to the Southern Pines Recreation Center to enjoy open gym. You can play basketball, walk, etc.

Wii Fit
The Douglass Community Center recently added the Nintendo Wii Fit to the program. You can do yoga, balance games, strength training and aerobics. It is one of the most physically challenging game consoles. The Wii Fit is availabel for use Monday thru Friday frm 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.

Wii League
Bring a friend or foe and join a Wii League. You can play tennis, bowling, baseball, golf and boxing! Four players can play at a time. You can create your own Mii (a version of youself) to save on file. Contact Rynet Oxendine to set up league play.

Wii Tourney
Join the group and compete against each other in baseball, tennis, boxing, bowling, and golf.

Line Dancing Great exercise and love the music
Line dancing is one of the most fun ways to get healthy and stay fit. You can lower your cholesterol, strengthen your heart and have fun at the same time. Join Carole Amlot as she teaches old favorites and new dances.

Urban Dance Mix Class
East Coast Swing, Social Ballroom and Soul Line Dancing
Classes will begin on September 6 and will be held every Monday from 6:30 - 9:00 pm. Fees: $35r / $70nr. Classes will be conducted at the Douglass Community Center auditorium. Earl Swann, dance consultant, will be instructing the classes. Classes are for eight weeks. Dancing offers the individual four health benefits: flexibilty, strength, endurance and a sense of well-being. It is fun and offers you the opportunity to meet new people and stay fit.

Fitness Room
Get into shape in our Douglass Community Center fitness room. Equipment available includes: exercise balls, stretch bands, free weights, bench press, shoulder press, bikes and more. Fitness room is open during regular operating hours. You can not get a better deal than this for fitness equipment!

Fishing "NEW"
Grandkids coming and want to go fishing or you just decided it might be fun for a few hours but you don't have a rod or reel? Come by the Douglass Community Center Office and check out a Zebco 33 classic rod and reel. Must fill out registration form then a check out card will be issued. Equipment available during operating hours. Call for more information 692-2463.

Bocce Ball
Visit the Douglass Community Center and enjoy this fun and fast-paced game with fellow participants. You have a choice of playing indoor or outdoor bocce ball. Play begins every Friday.

We offer education programs dedicated to older adults. These programs are designed to help educate and prepare older adults for certain issues. 

(You must pre-register for all Education Classes)

Senior Appreciation Day
This day is set aside to honor our older adults/seniors. We will enjoy a movie, popcorn, snacks and beverages. There is no fee for this event. Movie begins at 12:00 pm.

Monthly Activities
Every month we sponsor or host various activities that are free to all. We provide legal services, access to the Moore County Library and more!
Brown Bag Lunch and Game Day Older adults enjoying Brown Bag Lunch/Game Day
Eat your lunch, enjoy refreshments, drinks then when lunch is over we play some games. Bingo, Scattergories, Phase 10, Bridge, and Taboo are just a few of the games the group attempts. Do you have a favorite you would like to share? Bring it along!  Please register the Friday before.

National Night Out
National Night Out is a nationwide event committed to fighting crime and drug prevention. It is designed to: heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminials letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. This event sponsored by the Town of Southern Pines Police Department and co-sponsored by the Town of Southern Pines Recreation & Parks Department. On Tuesday, August 3 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm neighborhoods throughout Southern Pines are invited to join thousands of communities nationwide for the "National Night Out" crime and drug prevention event. We will have vendors, games, food and more!

How Does Your Garden Grow...

Southern Pines Community GardenEnjoying a great gardening experience!
Join the Organic Gardening movement and eat healthy! Are you interested in growing your own food while enjoying the physical activitity of gardening? Southern Pines residents or Moore County residents have the opportunity to lease a plot at the Town of Southern Pines Community Garden located behind the Armory Ball Field. The plots are 4' x 12' raised beds. Cost includes: irrigation, tools, mulch, etc., you will be responsible for supplying your seeds. 
You must complete a registraton form and pay the fee to secure a plot.
