Coaches Corner
All league teams in Southern Pines Recreation Sports Programs are dependent upon having adult managers and assistant coaches to provide instruction, leadership, and coordinating team practices. Their knowledge, time and efforts make a difference in our youth's experience while participating in team sports. Become a Volunteer Coach or Coach Helper and experience with your child the fun and excitement of youth sports and competition. Join the team - print out the form(s) listed below and return to Southern Pines Recreation Department 482 E. Connecticut Avenue, Southern Pines, NC 28387 today! (must be 16 years of age or older). Coach's will need to fill out both forms.

Sandhills Officials Association
The Sandhills Officials Association is currently recruiting sports officials for the coming year. Includes officiating of football, basketball, softball, and kickball games. No experience necessary. GOLF
Youth Golf Lessons
(Coed ages 9-15)
Golf is a sport you can play for a lifetime, so get your son or daughter started today! Dale Briggs & Fred VanSteen Golf Professionals at Knollwood Fairways will once again teach spring lessons. Class emphasis is on swing mechanics, club selection and basic and etiquette. Lessons will be conducted during four straight days. The program is sponsored by the Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Departmenr and co-sponsored by Knollwood Fairways. Junior Golf clubs are available for check out at the Campbell House Recreation office. We ask that parents arrive at least 5 minutes prior to their child's lessons, and they are there to pick their child back up at least 5 minutes prior to the end of the lesson. We will be offering two different week long sessions this spring.

2nd Annual Spring Fling Disc Golf Tournament
Come enjoy the beautiful landscape of the Reservoir Park while participating in the fast growing sport of Disc Golf. Participants will play 2 rounds of disc golf on Saturday, April 6th with a short break between rounds for lunch. The event begins with a shot gun start at 10:00am. Participants will be allowed to compete in either the Recreation Division, Advanced Division, or Pro Division.
Registration Deadline is Friday, March 22nd or until a maximum of 72 spots are filled.

Junior Tennis Program

The Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Department will again offer beginner level tennis lessons for youth this spring! In addition to learning a fun sport and further developing their tennis skills, your children will get a great workout and meet new friends! Lessons are Co-Sponsored by Sandhills Tennis Association, and taught at Southern Pines Memorial Park Tennis Courts on Monday evenings.

Girls Slow Pitch Softball
(Ages 8-12 as of August 1, 2013)
While playing in this softball league, girls will learn the basics of softball, get lots of exercise and have a lot of fun at the same time. Games and practices are held on Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays starting in mid April through late June. All games and practices are held at the Armory Ball Field off Morganton Road.,

T-Ball
(Coed ages 5-7 as of August 1, 2013)
T-ball is an introduction to baseball, that teaches boys and girls basic skills like throwing, catching and hitting - and having fun while they're at it! Games and practices are on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. All practices and games will be held at the fields beside the Campbell House, in the evenings an on some Saturday mornings. Practices and games begin in mid-April and run through late June. If your child is between the ages of 5 and 7, sign them up for something they will have a great time being a part of.

Summer Basketball League
(Coed ages 10-16 as of October 16, 2013)
Can't wait until the winter? The Southern Pines Recreation Center is the place to be this summer! We have basketball leagues for boys and girls, ages 10-16. This is a great way to learn the game or to get in shape before the winter league begins. Practices and games will be in the evenings, Monday through Thursday.

Hershey's Track & Field Games

Pinecrest High School, Saturday June 1st, 9:30 am - 12:00 pm.The Southern Pines Recreation & Parks Department and the Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring this year's Hershey's Track & Field Games. Local boys and girls are invited to compete in the Hershey's Track & Field Games, which have involved millions of youngsters from all over 50 states, District of Columbia, and Canada. Events willo include the 50, 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes, additional track runs, standing long jump and distance softball throw. There is an event for every type of athlete. Hershey's Track & Field is designed to encourge physical fitness among youth and emphasize participation and sportsmanship. Champinons of each event will compete in Regional Competition - TBD. Pitch, Hit & Run

The Southern Pines Recreation Department, Pinehurst Recreation Department, and the Aberdeen Recreation Department are co-sponsoring the 2013 local Major League Pitch, Hit, and Run competition in early May. This is a free event, and winners will qualify to compete at the regional, state and possibly national level in Atlanta at the Braves stadium.

2013 All Star Baseball Camp
(ages 5-12)
Co-sponsored with the Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Department and Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department. Jeff Hewill, Head Baseball Coach at Pinecrest High School and former ECU pitcher, will lead this instructional camp for youth ages 5 - 12. Camp will focus on basic skills and techniques of baseball and will be held at the Pinecrest High School baseball field. Each camper will receive a T-shirt. Registration forms are available at Pinecrest High School or Southern Pines Recreation Office.

AC Sandhills is hosting its Sandhills Superstar Summer Camps this June and July. Players receive individual attention and focus on soccer skills including trapping, passing, running, and goal shots.

Sandhills Optimist Baseball

This league is administered by Sandhills Optimist Club,on the fields in Southern Pines, Pinehurst, and Aberdeen. The season will run from March until July. New player evaluation March 2nd at Memorial Park, birth certificates required for all new players.
Divisions: Major League 11 & 12 years, Minor League 9 & 10 years Rookie League 7 & 8 years.

ADULT ACTIVITIES
Church Softball League
Organizational meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 5th at 6:00pm at the Train House, right beside the Campbell House (482 E. Connecticut Avenue - SP). Team coach/manager or representative must attend, as league fees, rules, and important dates will be discussed. Games played at the Armory & Optimist fields on Tuesdays & Thursdays. Church teams may represent individual (or combined churches if not enough players for an individual church team.)
This is a fun, social league for your church membership. All players on roster must be members in good standing with their church.
