Coaches Corner

All league teams in Southern Pines Recreation Sports Programs are dependent upon having adult managers and assistant coaches to provide instruction, leadership, and coordinating team practices. Their knowledge, time and efforts make a difference in our youth's experience while participating in team sports. Become a Volunteer Coach or Coach Helper and experience with your child the fun and excitement of youth sports and competition. Join the team - print out the form(s) listed below and return to Southern Pines Recreation Department 482 E. Connecticut Avenue, Southern Pines, NC 28387 today! (must be 16 years of age or older). Coach's will need to fill out both forms.

Hershey's Track & Field Games
(ages 9-14 as of December 31, 2008)
Local boys and girls are invited to compete in Hershey's 30th Anniversary of Hershey Games; which have involved millions of youngsters from all 50 states, District of Columbia, and Canada. This event will be held at Pinecrest High School on Saturday, May 10th, 9:00am. Events will include 50, 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes; additional track runs a standing long jump and a distance softball throw. There is an event for every type of athlete. Hershey Track and Field Games is designed to encourage physical fitness among youth and emphasize participation and sportsmanship. May 10th is Southern Pines area local event date.
Champions of each event will compete in Regional Competition on May 10.

Girls Slow Pitch SoftballI've got it!
(ages 8-12 - age as of August 1, 2008)
come join the fastest growing slow pitch softball league in the county. Emphasis is on fun, fitness and learning the basics of softball. Games and practices are held on Saturdays, Mondays & Wednesdays. Pre-registration required. Registration ends Friday, April 18th.

All Star Baseball Camp
(ages 6-12)
Pinecrest High School Coach Jeff Hewitt (former ECU pitcher and all conference player) and staff will lead the instructional Baseball Camp. Players receive significant individual attention; with the focus on fundamentals of position play as well as hitting, sliding, and base running.
Pre-registration required. Forms available at Pinecrest High School Office or Southern Pines Recreation Office
Coach Hewitt will conduct camp registration on Opening Day Sandhills Optimist Club Baseball season March 29th

T-Ball
(ages 5-7)You can do it... !
Great Fun! A basic introduction to baseball for 5, 6 & 7 year olds (age as of August 1, 2008). Practices held on Monday, Wednesday & Thursday (if needed) evenings at the Campbell House Ball Field. Pre-Registration required. Registration ends Friday, April 18th. You may bring the form by or mail to: Southern Pines Recreation 482 E. Little Tyke Indoor SoccerKick it!
(ages 4-5 - as of August 1, 2008)
Run, Kick and Score! Indoor Soccer is a great program for boys and girls to develop coordination skills like running, kicking, and passing a soccer ball. They will learn ho to play together as a team and meet new friends. This league is co-sponsored with Sandhills Youth Soccer League. Players must provide their own shin guards and gym shoes. League play will emphasize fun, and learning the basic fundamentals of soccer. Pre-registration required.

"Hoop It up " Summer BasketballRebound!!
(ages 10-16 as of October 2008)
It's summer time and the Southern Pines Recreation Center gym is the court to play your best summer basketball. Leagues for boys and girls with an All-Star competition will make this a fun summer. Practices and games will be week nights and Saturdays if necessary. Volunteer parent coaches required, see Coaches Corner above for registration or notify Athletic Coordinator if interested in coaching basketball. Pre-registration is required.

The Serve!Youth Tennis Lessons
(5 hours of instructions)

What do serve, volley, and deuce mean?
These are just some of the terms used in tennis, which is a sport that can be played for a lifetime. Bob Adams will instruct Youth Tennis Lessons for beginners. Lessons are co-sponsored with the Sandhills Tennis Association. Need a racquet? Check one out at the Recreation Office. Registration: open until classes fill. Junior Tennis League
(ages 10 thru rising High School senior)
This fun traveling team is for players advanced to beginner level or better. The team travels to and hosts teams from surrounding counties. Players will get great exercise, strengthen their game play, develop leadership skills, and learn how to play as a team.

Youth Golf League
(ages 8-17)
Attend instruction clinics and improve your golf game on challenging area of golf courses. Three weekly sessions include clinic instruction followed by playing golf on area courses. Players will get great exercise, strengthen their game and have an opportunitiy to participate in their own Junior Golf Tournament on the fourth week. Adult parental volunteers needed to help drive carts and supervise league golfers.

Church Softball League/MeetingBatter Up
Games will be played at the Armory and Optimist fields on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Church teams may represent individual or combined churches. This is a fun, social league for your church membership.
There will be 15 teams this year and all will play each other one time in regular season. Two champions and two runners up will be determined by two double-elimination tournaments; one for the top 7 finishers and one for the bottom 8 finishers.
A coaches meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 8th at 6:30pm at the Campbell House. At this meeting each team will be allowed one vote. This meeting is mandatory and your church will be required to have one team member present to vote.

Youth Tackle FootballBlock Him!
(ages 10-12 as of August 1, 2008)
If its late summer-early fall; it is time agian to play FOOTBALL! Emphasis on skill development, football fundamentals, fitness and conditioning. Teamwork, sportmanship and decision making skills that will help them thru life. Practices held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and games on Tuesday when play begins. A minimum weight of 65 lbs is required; there is no maximum restriction but players over 130 lbs may not advance the football. Pre-registration is required.
