Coaches Corner
All league teams in Southern Pines Recreation Sports Programs are dependent upon having adult managers and assistant coaches to provide instruction, leadership, and coordinating team practices. Their knowledge, time and efforts make a difference in our youth's experience while participating in team sports. Become a Volunteer Coach or Coach Helper and experience with your child the fun and excitement of youth sports and competition. Join the team - print out the form(s) listed below and return to Southern Pines Recreation Department 482 E. Connecticut Avenue, Southern Pines, NC 28387 today! (must be 16 years of age or older). Coach's will need to fill out both forms.

Summer "Hoop It Up" Basketball Leagues
(ages 10-16 - age as of Oct 16, 2009)
Its summer time and the Southern Pines Recreation Center gym is the court to play your best summer basketball. Leagues for boys and girls, ages 10-16 year olds. Practices and games will be week nights.
Volunteers will be need to coach basketball. If you're interested in coaching, contact Jordan Phillips, Athletic Coordinator at 692-2463

Little Tyke Indoor Soccer
(ages 4 & 5 - as of Aug 1, 2009)
Run, Kick and Score! Indoor Soccer is a great program for boys and girls to develop coordination skills like running, kicking and passing a soccer ball. They will learn how to play together as a tema and meet new friends. This league is co-sponsored with the Sandhills Celtic Soccer Club. Players must provide their own shin guards and gym shoes. League play will emphasize fun, and learning the basic fundamentals of soccer. Pre-registration is required.

Youth Tennis Lessons
(5 hours of instructions)
Do you know what Love, Foot Fault, Deuce and Rushing the net mean?
These are tennis terms that your child will learn; in addition to learning a fun sport that offers both fitness and competition. Youth Beginner and Intermediate Tennis Sessions will be offered this spring and summer with 5 one-hour lessons per session. Lessons are co-sponsored by the Sandhills Tennis Association and are taught at the Downtown Park Tennis Courts. Need a racquet? Check one out at the Recreation Office. Junior Tennis League
(Ages 10 thru rising High School Senior)
This is a fun traveling junior team for boys and girls ages 10 through rising high school seniors. (Younger, skilled players accepted.) The team travels to and hosts teams from the surrounding areas. Minimum skill of advanced beginner is necessary. Practices and matches are during the week. So, if you are interested in playing tennis, sign up today. Practices start in late June.

Youth Golf Lessons (ages 7-15)
5 hours of instruction
Golf is a sport you can play for a lifetime. Fred Vansteen, Golf Professional at Knollwood Fairways will teach the fall lessons. Class emphasis is on basics of golf. Lessons are co-sponsored by Knollwood Fairways. Junior Golf clubs are availabe for check out at the Campbell House. Pre-register by mail, fax (910-692-1835), or come by the office at 482 E. Youth Golf League
(ages 8-17)
Attend instruction clinics and improve your golf game on challenging area golf courses. Three weekly sessions include clinic instruction followed by 2 hours of play on area courses. Players will get great exercise, strengthen their game play and have an opportunity to participate in their own Junior Golf Tournament on the fourth week. Adult parental volunteeers needed to help drive carts and supervise league golfers. Courses TBA

Youth Tackle Football
(ages 10-12 - age as of Aug 1, 2009)
If it's late summer or early fall; it's time again to play FOOTBALL! Emphasis on skill development, football fundamentals, fitness and conditioning, teamwork, sportmanship and decision making skills that will help them thru life. Practices held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and games on Tuesday when league play begins. A minimum weight of 65 lbs is required; there is no maximum restriction but players over 130lbs may not advance the football. Pre-registration is required. Registration ends August 27, 2009.

ADULT ACTIVITIES
New - Adult Soccer Leagues
Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Department is Co-sponsoring Adult Soccer Leagues to be held at Armory Softball Field. Sandhills Futbol Club will be running the leagues on week nights from July 15 - August 31. There are 3 leagues to choose from. The Coed Open Fun Leagues for players with minimal experience looking to play for fun. The Open Competitive League is for more experienced players wanting to compete on a more competitive level. Summer Adult Pick Up Sand Volleyball
Need a good workout, and meet some new friends? Grab some buddies and head over to Memorial Park in Southern Pines for Adult pick up sand volleyball on Sunday afternoons 2:00 pm - 4:00pm. Courts maintained by the Recreation Department and volleyballs are available on a loaner basis. Everyone is welcome regardless of skill level.
