Fitness & Classes for Seniors

Purpose
Our fitness and wellness programs / classes allow individuals to improve their health or maintain it. Our programs / classes are fun and offer positive, life-long productivity. Some of our program / classes are prorated. All classes are fun and exciting.

Reservoir Park
Enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds of nature while getting into shape at the Reservoir Park. We have over two miles of walking trails, disc golf, and fitness equipment located on the greenway trails.
Senior Gym Time
Date: Monday - Friday
Time:School Hours 9:30-11:30 a.m. (During school)
Time: Summer Hours 5:30-6:30 p.m. (Summer)
Fee: $10 residents / $20 nonresidents (six month cycle)
Location: Southern Pines Recreation Center

Walking is one of the best methods of exercising. It helps burn calories, reduces the risk of developing or dying of heart disease, helps maintain healthy bones, controls blood pressure, etc. Come out and join the senior gym time and enjoy walking while meeting new people. Gyms are climate controlled. Enjoy our weekly activity day (corn hole, basketball, football throw, etc) on Wednesdays plus refreshments. Coffee available.

Beginner Tap
Dates: Wednesdays
Time: 12:30 pm -2:00 p.m.
Fee: $15 residents / $30 nonresidents (six month cycle)
Location: Douglass Community Center

Ever wish you had learned to tap dance? It is never to late. Join the Senior Division for beginner tap. The benefits are healthy and fun.

Advanced Tap
Dates: Fridays
Time: 10-11:30 a.m.
Fee: $15 residents / $30 nonresidents (six month cycle)
Location: Douglass Community Center

Join the fun and enjoy the memories of tap dancing.

Fitness Room
Date: Monday - Friday
Time: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Fee: $10 residents /$20 nonresidents (six month cycle)
Location: Douglass Community Center

Get into shape in our Douglass Community Center fitness room. Equipment available includes: exercise balls, stretch bands, free weights, exercise tubing, universal machine, elliptical machine, stationary bikes, treadmill, Wii fit, and more. Fitness room is open during regular operating hours. You can not get a better deal than this for fitness equipment.

Table Tennis
Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays (September - February)
Time: 7-9 p.m.
Fee: $10 residents / $20 nonresidents
Location: Douglass Community Center

Table tennis is the most popular racket sport in the world, with over 300 million active members of governing associations worldwide. You can become a better table tennis player by joining our class. Mary Crusius leads the class. We use regulation tables, table tennis balls and rackets.  

Corn Hole
Monday - Friday 
Corn Hole, also known as bean bag toss, corn toss, baggo, or bags, is a lawn game in which players take turns throwing bean bags at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. These platforms are usually with plywood or plastic and are often decorated. A corn bag in the hole scores three points, while one on the platform scores one point. Play continues until a player reaches the score of 21. Bring a friend and challenge another team. You can play Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Call ahead of time to set up game. 

Disc Golf

Date: Wednesdays
Time: 9-11 a.m.
Location: Reservoir Park

Disc golf is a flying disc game in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, "The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc." The number of disc golf coiurses doubled in the eight years from 2000 to 2008. The game is played in about 40 countries around the world. It is similar to golf and very fun. Come out and experience this fun, entertaining game at the beautiful Reservoir Park.

Fishing
Grandkids coming and want to go fishing or you just decided it might be fun for a few hours but you don't have a rod or reel? Come by the Douglass Community Center Office and check out a Zebco 33 classic rod and reel for check out free. Must fill out registration form then a check out card will be issued. Equipment available during operating hours. Call for more information, 910-692-2463.

Shuffleboard

Location: Memorial Park Shuffleboard Court

You can enjoy one of the most fun activities for free! Stop by the Douglass Community Center to check out a key and play shuffleboard at our Memorial Park location. We have two shuffleboard Courts. You can play day or night.
